The Hillside Inn
epitomizes the historic treasure of the village of Ephraim.
It is a blend of the Moravian culture and Norwegian ethnic heritage,
with the best of the 20th century added. The Norwegian influence
is still strong - in the sturdy stone architecture of the gabled
village hall, in the celebration of the bonfire-illuminated
Fyr-Bal Fest with the naming of an honorary Chieftain, and in
the Scandinavian foods crafts found in restaurants and shops.
Music permeated the whole of Moravian life and culture. Its
tradition of instrumental ensembles in the church played a part
in the development of the nationally acclaimed Peninsula Music
Festival. The festival was started by Dr. Thor Johnson in the
1950's with the sponsorship of the Peninsula Arts Association.
In recent years,
many artists have sought out the Ephraim area as a haven. These
artists and craftspeople contribute much to the character and
values of the village, as does its musical heritage, all of
which complement and reflect the natural beauty of the area.
